Torres Comes Up Big For Colonials, 5-3

NEWARK, N.J. (June 28, 2011) - Chris Torres delivered two runs with a sixth inning single and scored a crucial insurance run in the top of the ninth, leading the Pittsfield Colonials to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the Newark Bears Tuesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Bears (16-15), their longest losing streak of the season, while Pittsfield (17-14) moved past Newark in the Can-Am League standings.
Torres' two-run single gave Pittsfield the lead for good and he scored the insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Matt Nandin.
The Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on two Colonial errors. Brandon Watson led off the inning with a walk and Juan Martinez reached on an error. Tim Raines, Jr. then reached on bunt single and when Pittsfield starter Chad Paronto threw the ball into the stands, scoring Watson with the first run. Danny Santiesteban later grounded out, scoring Martinez with the second run.
The Bears then increased the lead to 3-0 with a run in the home third. Raines, Jr. led off the inning with his second single and promptly stole second base. Raines, Jr. then came home to score on a single by Billy Alvino.
The Colonials then scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth, courtesy of two walks and a costly error by left fielder Watson on a fly ball that would have been the third out. Peter Fatse and Jerod Edmondson scored on the error, bringing Pittsfield to within 3-2.
The Colonials then took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a double from Billy Mottram, a single from Johnny Welch and the two-run single from Torres with two out.
Estrada (1-4) departed after six innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs, but left trailing, 4-3. Anthony Pluta, who was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, replaced Estrada.
Pluta was excellent in his two innings of work, striking out five of the six outs he recorded, three of which were caught looking.
Paronto, the former MLB hurler, pitched six innings to even his record at 3-3. T.J. Wink struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first save. The Bears struck out nine times over the final five innings and managed just two singles.
The Bears will resume their series with the Colonials Wednesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch slated for 5:35 p.m. Casey Gaynor is slated to pitch for the Bears.
