June 28, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Behind another solid outing from starter James Leverton, the New Jersey Jackals won their eighth consecutive contest, knocking off the first-place Quebec Capitales 2-1 in the opener of a four-game series on Tuesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The victory, the Jackals' 12th in their last 14 games, snapped Quebec's five-game winning streak and pulls New Jersey within three games of the Capitales with 15 games remaining in the first half of the Can-Am League season. The winner of the first-half title clinches an automatic playoff spot.
Leverton (4-2) struck out a career-high 10 batters and walked just two as he allowed just one run and scattered seven hits over 7 1/3 innings.
Quebec starter Dan Sausville loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of singles in the first inning before leaving the game after he got sick on the field. After reliever Guillaume Duguay entered and induced a double play, Jackals' first baseman Mike Jones deposited a two-run single to right field to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead.
Four Quebec relievers combined to turn in eight scoreless innings after Sausville exited, but the Capitales mustered just one run on a third-inning RBI single off the bat of shortstop Jeff Helps following a leadoff single by catcher Patrick D'Aoust.
In the top of the ninth, Quebec's Michael Thompson led off with a single to put the tying run aboard. The Capitales sent Ben Gorang in to pinch run, but New Jersey closer Jeff Gogal entered and got Sebastian Boucher to line into a double play before Gogal struck out D'Aoust to end the contest.
The Jackals and Capitales return to action on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. for the second game of their four-game set when New Jersey sends southpaw Ryan Kulik (2-0, 4.87 ERA) to the mound against Quebec right-hander Brian Rembisz (2-1, 1.86 ERA), who has posted the lowest ERA in the Can-Am League this season. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
Jackal Bites: James Leverton's previous career high was seven strikeouts, set in his third start of the season on June 6 against Rockland... Third baseman Nick Giarraputo drew his first walk of the season in the sixth inning... Quebec's Jeff Helps, who entered the night 7-for-44 in 15 games this season, went 3-for-3... With his two-run single, Mike Jones extended his Can-Am League RBI lead to 32.
