Can-Am League Game Recaps

June 28, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Pittsfield 5, Newark 3

Newark took an early 2-0 lead in the first, eventually leading by as many as three runs. But back-to-back two-run innings form Pittsfield put the Colonials on top for good in the sixth. With the go-ahead run on second, Colonials C Chris Torres singled to put his club on top for good. Pittsfield added another run in the ninth to bring the final to 5-3. Torres finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Colonials starting pitcher Chad Paronto picked up his third win of the season to pull his record to .500, going six innings and striking out seven.

New Jersey 2, Quebec 1

Jackals DH Mike Jones gave New Jersey a 2-0 lead with a single in the first, and the Capitales couldn't break Jackals pitching, giving New Jersey a 2-1 win. Jones' first-inning hit was one of his two in as many at-bats, making him the only New Jersey batter with more than one hit. Jackals pitching, led by starter James Leverton, allowed only eight hits and struck out 12 Capitales batters - 10 coming via Leverton, whose win was his fourth of the season.

Worcester 13, Rockland 2

To begin the bottom of the fourth inning, Worcester was locked in a 2-2 tie with the Boulders. That didn't last long. The Tornadoes went ahead by one in the fourth, then scored at least two runs in the next four innings to take an 11-run win. Worcester 3B Mark Minicozzi scored four runs and batted one in on his 3-for-4 night, including his fourth home run of the season. While his team was building up a nearly insurmountable lead, starting Tornadoes pitcher Shawn Giblair was retiring nearly every batter he faced. Giblair struck up five Rockland batters, allowing three hits and three walks in eight innings. Joining Minicozzi in the home run club, Worcester DH Nick Salotti went 2-for-4 with two run and three RBI.

Brockton 19, New York 0

The bottom third of the Rox lineup batted in 12 of the club's 19 runs, four coming in one at-bat when Chris Grossman hit a first-inning grand slam. Grossman scored twice in his 3-for-6 night. Brockton got a solid performance from its pitching staff, as well, with four hurler combining to shut out the Federals while striking out 10. Starting pitcher Dustin Birosak was responsible for eight of those strikeouts, earning his third win of the season with no losses thus far. Along with Grossman, 1B Trey Hernandez and SS Dominic Ramos also hit homers, the round-trippers accounting for eight of the Rox' 19 runs.
