June 28, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Tornadoes were only held scoreless in two innings Tuesday night as they defeated the Rockland Boulders 13-2 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. It was the second victory this season by double-digit runs, with the other coming against another New York team, the Federals (20-1 in game six of the season).
Shawn Gilblair pitched eight innings for Worcester, allowing just six baserunners (three hits, two walks, and a hit batter, plus two earned runs). He retired the last 11 Boulders batters he faced and picked up his second victory of the season, striking out five hitters.
Albert Ayala pitched a perfect ninth, picking up a pair of strikeouts to end the Rockland team's night at the plate.
Roger Lincoln allowed eight runs (six earned) over the course of his 5.2 inning start for the visitors, giving up nine hits and three walks (one intentional), in addition to striking out four batters. Justin Fry and Drew Coffey each gave up multiple runs in their respective outings, as the Tornadoes totaled 16 hits.
Mark Minicozzi was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and fell just a triple short of hitting the cycle. He walked twice (once intentionally), with three of his runs scored coming when he led the inning off with a hit. Nick Salotti hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to give Worcester its first lead of 2-1.
The Boulders tied it up with a run in the fourth, but the Tornadoes broke the tie in the next half inning with a Minicozzi homerun and piled on ten more runs in the middle innings.
Eight of the nine Tornadoes hitters scored at least a run, while every single player reached twice or more (at least once from a hit). Tony Patane ended his night with consecutive RBI singles. Chris Colabello and Alex Trezza were among six Worcester hitters to score a run and knock one in during the Tornadoes first match-up ever with the Boulders.
Worcester will send Kevin Cooper to the mound in game two of the four-game set Wednesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
