Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (June 1, 2008) - The Brockton Rox scored double-digit runs for the second consecutive night and left Nashua, NH with a historic 11-3 win over the Pride. Rox LHP Rolando Viera (1-1) recorded his 21st victory in a Brockton Rox uniform to tie the franchise mark for career wins.
Viera worked five solid innings before departing in the sixth, two batters after taking a line drive off of his leg. The left-hander allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out six in his outing. His next victory will make him the Rox all-time career wins leader.
One night after scoring 13 runs on 18 hits against the Pride, the Rox offense did not miss a beat as it came out and poured on 11 more runs on 20 hits. Already leading 2-0 in the fourth inning, Rox RF Matt Maloney followed up a leadoff walk by DH Jud Thigpen with a two-run home run over the left field wall.
Nashua created the only drama of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brockton led 6-1 and Viera looked to be in cruise control after striking out four of the last seven batters he had faced. Nashua started the sixth inning with four straight hits including a bloop single to right and a line drive off the shin of Viera. After an RBI double by Pride 1B Bryan Duplissie and a walk to load the bases, the Rox turned to the bullpen and summoned RHP James Baker. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Baker induced a shallow fly out to right field and then a ground ball double-play to end the threat.
The Rox took the momentum right back in the sixth with a five-run inning capped by the Can-Am League's leading hitter 2B Melvin Falu. Falu drilled a 1-2 fastball to the left-centerfield gap with the bases loaded to score two runs. C Lee Rubin followed with an RBI single, and LF Joe Frazee drove in a run by reaching on a fielder's choice to cap scoring.
Brockton now turns its attention to the Sussex Skyhawks for the second time this season. The Rox will travel to Skylands Park in Sussex County, NJ on Monday for a three-game series with the Skyhawks. Sussex took three of four games from Brockton at Campanelli Stadium in the teams' first encounter.
Since being shut out on May 29th, the Rox have scored 32 runs on 51 hits in three games. As of the end of the day Sunday, the Rox had more runs (72) than the second-place Quebec Capitales had hits (71).
