New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - New Jersey starter Michael Vicaro pitch seven and two-third innings of one-run ball as the Jackals defeated the Ottawa Rapidz by a score of 3-1 on Sunday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium.

After Ottawa took a 1-0 third-inning lead on an RBI single by left fielder Jereme Milons, New Jersey scored three unanswered runs to win the four-game series against the Rapidz.

New Jersey jumped on top with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Newly-acquired first baseman Juan Tejeda led off with a single and came around to score two batters later on a double by catcher Craig Maddox. The next batter, center fielder Zack Smithlin singled Maddox home to make it 2-1 Jackals. Smithlin later added some insurance with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh, which scored Tejeda.

Smithlin led the charge on offense for New Jersey, going 3-4 with two RBIs. Tejeda had a solid Jackals debut, going 2-3 with two runs scored.

Vicaro (1-1) struck out three batters while walking just one as he lasted into the eighth to earn the victory. Ottawa starter Mike Kusiewicz (0-3) took the tough-luck for the Rapidz, yielding three runs on eight hits over seven innings. In three starts this year (all losses), Kusiewicz has allowed just eight earned runs. Rusty Tucker pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the season.

The Jackals begin a three-game series against Les Capitales de Quebec tomorrow night at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with Aaron Tressler getting the start for New Jersey. If you can't make it out to the game, you can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning ten minutes prior to the start of the game.
