Rox Roll Over Pride; 11-3
June 1, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
(NASHUA, N.H., June 1, 2008) The Brockton Rox pounded out a season high 20 hits off of five Pride pitchers to score eleven runs in the series finale, taking a third straight win from Nashua, 11-3
The Rox blew the game open in the top of the seventh inning, when with one out, they strung together sevens straight base runners on four singles, two doubles, and a fielders choice, eventually plating five runs and that gave Brockton an 11-3 lead that they went on to win by.
"They're just hot," said Pride manager Rick Miller after the game. "We ran into a hot team at the wrong time... We just ran into a hot team. They're swinging that bat really well."
The Rox were led offensively by right fielder Matt Maloney, who ended the night going 4-for-5, with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Eight Rox hitters enjoyed a multiple hit night, while six batters had at least one RBI in the win.
Winning pitcher Rolando Viera (1-1) went five innings, allowing three runs, on eight hits, while walking two and striking out six. He was able to avoid two bases loaded jams, including one in the bottom of the sixth inning when he left reliever James Baker the bases full with no outs, and two runs already across for Nashua. Baker allowed no further damage, getting a pop-out and an inning ending double play to end the Pride's threat.
Nashua's starting pitcher Bucky Kosyk lasted just four and two-thirds innings in the loss (0-2), giving up four runs, on nine hits, one walk and two strike outs. The Pride sent four relievers to the mound to combine for four and two thirds innings of work, allowing seven runs, on eleven hits, one walk and three strike outs.
"We need to get some starters to go deep into the game before we have to come to our relief core," said Miller. "If we can do that then I think we'll be alright. If we can come in with a lead, maybe we'll have a different mindset pitching."
Offensively for the Pride, infielder Jack Joffrion hit his second home run within 24 hours, a solo shot in the fifth inning. Catcher Luis Rodriguez and first baseman Bryan Duplissie had the other RBI for the Nashua.
The Pride have the day off on Monday before heading north of the border for a six game road trip in Canada, where they will play three games versus the Ottawa Rapidz and the Quebec Capitales.
"Baseball is a game of streaks," said Miller. "Right now we are in a bit of a funk. I think getting away from home, getting away from Brockton... a change of scenery might do us good."
Nashua will open up game one of the road trip at 7:05 in Ottawa Stadium, ace Hideki Nagasaka (1-0) is slated to make the start.
