Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Despite a spirited late-inning rally, the Brockton Rox were unable to snap their losing streak, falling to the Sussex Skyhawks, 7-5 in ten innings, for the club's fourth defeat in a row in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium on Friday evening.
The Skyhawks got on the board first when RF Caleb Stewart blasted a second-inning solo shot, his seventh of the season. Brockton responded in the third, as SS Dominic Ramos singled, moved to third when CF Chris Valencia reached on an error, and scored on 2B Derek Kinzler's sacrifice fly.
Sussex (3-7 second half, 28-28 overall) regained the lead when C Ryan Boelsen knocked a sixth-inning two-run homer off of Rox starter Wayne Lundgren, and added a pair of runs in the eighth on a solo home run by 2B Joe Pereschina and an RBI single by 1B Kris Sanchez, making the score 5-1.
Brockton (4-7, 31-27) started its march back in the bottom of the eighth; after loading the bases, C Chris Grossman grounded into a double play but brought home a run, and LF Mike Conroy singled home 3B Shawn Williams, making his Campanelli Stadium debut.
With the score 5-3 going into the ninth, Ramos led off the inning with a single before Valencia reached on a walk. After the two advanced a base on Kinzler's sacrifice bunt, RF Keith Brachold singled home both runners off of Sussex closer Duaner Sanchez to tie the game and send it into extras.
Sussex quickly went back ahead in the tenth, scoring two runs on 3B Nick Giarraputo's two-run single off of reliever Colin Lynch. Brockton threatened in its half of the frame, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but Matt Salvato fanned Ramos for the third out to preserve the win.
Brachold, Ramos and DH Jeff Hanson each had two hits for Brockton, while SS Chase Fontaine went 3-for-5 with three runs scored on the Skyhawks' side.
Lundgren received a no-decision on the evening, throwing seven and two-thirds innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out seven. Lynch (4-4) took the loss in relief. For Sussex, starter Tim Stringer was superb, giving up one unearned run on three hits in six innings of work, fanning three. Sanchez (2-1) blew the ninth-inning save but was credited with the victory, while Salvato earned his second save.
The two teams meet again on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium at 6:05 p.m., with Mike Smith (6-3) on the bump against Jusef Frias (1-3) on Wrestling Night at the ballpark.
