New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The Pittsfield Colonials plated six runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie en route to an 8-2 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium in the second contest of a four-game weekend series.
With 25-year-old Chris Vasami, a converted infielder, making his first professional start on the mound for the Jackals, Pittsfield 3B Jason Taylor opened the scoring in the top of the second when he cracked a solo home run to left field. Taylor's sixth blast of the season made it 1-0 Colonials.
The Jackals scored both their runs against Pittsfield's Miguel Flores in the bottom of the second when DH Jacob Butler reached on an error and 2B Travis Jones walked before LF Jeff Grose doubled to left to give the Jackals a 2-1 advantage. The Colonials evened the score at 2-2 on an RBI single by C Scott Knazek in the fourth inning.
In the ill-fated eighth, Pittsfield sent 10 batters to the plate. After LF Rafael Cabreja drew a one-out walk with Edgar Estanga on the mound, DH Donny Leon hit a ball to left center that appeared to bounce off the wall for an RBI double, but it was later ruled a home run to give the Colonials a 4-2 lead. After Jackals' manager Joe Calfapietra was ejected for arguing the call, the Colonials used a pair of RBI singles by 1B Jerod Edmondson and SS Matt Nandin and a Daniel Carte two-run base knock to cap the scoring at 8-2. Estanga (1-4) surrendered four runs in the frame to take the loss while fellow reliever Mike Pontius yielded the final two.
Vasami lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits. Flores (5-3) earned his second win in three starts against New Jersey this season after giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with five walks and six strikeouts in seven solid frames. Pittsfield's Rafael Lluberes and Kyle Bradley each contributed a scoreless frame of relief while New Jersey's Lou Fernandez held the Colonials off the scoreboard in the top of the ninth.
The Jackals (6-5 second half, 25-32 overall) and Colonials (9-3, 29-30) continue their four-game weekend series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. In a battle of southpaws, New Jersey will send Paul Fagan (0-0, 6.00) to the mound for his second start in a Jackals uniform against Pittsfield's Dave Qualben (3-5, 4.90). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

Jackal Bites: Pittsfield's Jerod Edmondson went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. The Can-Am League record is 30, set by fellow Colonial Daniel Carte earlier this season... Edgar Estanga had turned in five straight scoreless outings while Mike Pontius had tossed five shutout frames during the Jackals current homestand... New Jersey is now 4-8 against the Colonials in 2010.
