
Tornadoes Game Notes For July 30th

Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Game Notes: Starting for the Tornadoes will be 6'2" lefty Zach Zuercher. He has started 5 games for Worcester since joining the team on June 25th. Despite the fact that he is 0-2 on the season, the team is 3-2 when he starts. He had a rough start his last time out against the Pittsfield Colonials, going 5 innings while giving up 8 hits and 7 earned runs in the 7-1 loss on July 25th. So far on the year, Zuercher has struck out 14 batters and given up 42 hits while walking 19 batters in 30 innings pitched. His best two starts have come against Les Capitales, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) and 11 hits in 10 innings. He lost the first game and the Tornadoes ended up winning the second one. Opposing him will be 5'11" righty Andy Schon, who has started 4 games and appeared in 11 total. This will be his second start in a row and his first against Worcester. Schon is 1-0 as a starter this season as well as 1-0 against Worcester. He has 34 strikeouts in 34 innings, walking just 11 batters and giving up 36 hits. Schon has had 3 relief appearances against the Tornadoes this season, giving up just 1 hit in 7 innings of work. He has a miniscule batting average against of .048 when facing Worcester and has allowed just 4 men to reach base safely.
Last Night: Worcester dropped the first game of a four game homestand against Les Capitales 7-3 last night. John Slusarz picked up the loss, giving up 5 earned runs and 7 hits in 5 innings pitched. Matt McDonald did a good job in relief, giving up just 2 earned runs in 4 innings of work. Les Capitales were helped by their 4 home runs, 2 of which were by DH Marc Mimeault. He was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored while Sebastien Boucher led the team with 3 RBI's courtesy of his 3 run homer in the top of the 3rd. In that inning, Quebec scored 4 times before an out was recorded and never looked back. Worcester was able to get 2 runs in the bottom half of the frame from a Nick Salotti 2-run double, but the Capitales would add one run in the 4th, 6th and 7th innings. Mimeault (2), Boucher, and Robert Wagner hit the 4 Quebec homers. Omar Pena was the only Tornado to have a multi-hit game with 2 singles.
Tornadoes: Offense: Ryan Crespi leads the team with a .342 batting average and .417 on base percentage. Chris Colabello leads the team with 37 RBI's and is tied with Danny Santiesteban for the team lead in home runs with 8. Colabello and Santiesteban are also 2nd and 3rd in batting averages with .288 and .287 respectively. Santiesteban's .594 slugging percentage is tops on the team. Omar Pena leads the team with 29 walks while Nick Salotti and Mark Minicozzi are tied for 2nd on the team with 31 RBI's. Pitching: John Kelly leads the team with 61 strikeouts and has a team low of a .196 batting average against, .252 on base percentage against, and a WHIP under 1. Shawn Gilblair has the most appearances (23) and innings pitched (34 1/3) out of all Tornadoes relievers. Gilblair, Rick Asadoorian, and Albert Ayala have held opponents to no runs over 11 innings of relief. Asadoorian and Just Knoff are the only two pitchers to not surrender multiple home runs this season. Kelly, Knoff, and Chris Farley are the only three starters who have yet to make a relief appearance.
