Rox knock out 15 hits but lose 7-5 to Sussex

AUGUSTA, NJ- Despite a season-high 15 hits, the Brockton Rox fell 7-5 to the Sussex Skyhawks before a crowd of 1,514 at Skylands Park in Augusta, NJ in the first game of a three-game series. Seven of the nine Rox starters had multi-hit games, including three from C Jason Radwan, who is seven for his last eleven. 1B Francisco Lebron extended his hitting streak to eight games in the loss. RHP Joey Baker took the loss for the Rox, allowing six runs (five earned) in four innings. The Rox have yet to win in five games at Sussex this season and are 1-7 against the Skyhawks in eight games. Brockton falls to 28-26 overall and 4-4 in the second half, while the Skyhawks are now 27-26 overall, 4-4 in the second half.

Sussex scored two runs in the second and added an unearned run against Baker in the third inning. In the fourth, the Rox rallied to tie the game. 3B Mike Torres knocked his team-leading 13th double of the season, a shot to left-center field to drive home two runs. SS Mike Scanzano capped the scoring in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Sussex retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, as CF James Cooper had his second hit of the game, and RBI triple, and scored on an RBI double by Sussex SS Bobby LeNoir to give Sussex a 6-3 lead.

In the seesaw battle, the Rox came back with two runs in the fifth. With the bases full, LF Simon Williams drilled a single through the left side, and CF Brad Rosenblat's infield single that followed plated another run. Leading 6-5, Sussex added an insurance run when DH Scott Grimes homered to left to make it 7-5 Skyhawks. RHP Jake Brooks retired Lebron with a runner on base to end the eighth frame and tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save. RHP Wayne Lundgren struck out three and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for the Rox in relief.

Tomorrow at Skylands Park. Rox RHP Brad Guy (3-2, 3.23 ERA) takes on LHP Tim Tisch (0-0, 7.27 ERA) for Sussex at 7:05 PM in the second game of the series.
