Pittsfield, Mass. - The Brockton Rox (16-9, 42-29) had no answer for

Miguel Flores on Friday night, as the righthander struck out 14 in the series opener at Wahconah Park, leading the Pittsfield Colonials (16-10, 41-31) to a 5-2 victory.

Flores (3-8) went the distance for Pittsfield, surrendering just two runs on seven hits, while walking one. The 23 year-old threw an astonishing 145 pitches in the win.

The first of the two runs allowed by Flores came in the third inning, when Brockton's Chris Valencia scored on an RBI groundout by Keith Brachold to put the Rox up early.

The Colonials responded in the bottom of the third, as an RBI double from Angel Molina plated Jerod Edmondson to tie the game at one. For Molina, it was his 26th RBI in the last 13 games.

Julian Sampson

(7-4) pitched well for Brockton early in the contest, but ran into some trouble in the sixth inning when Chris Torres launched a two-run homer to score Peter Fatse and give Pittsfield a 3-1 lead.

The Colonials added to their lead in the seventh when an infield single from Fatse scored Danny Bomback and made it a 4-1 game. Fatse finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Bomback went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.

Mark Rosen, who relieved Sampson with one out in the seventh inning, allowed another Pittsfield run in the eighth after Edmondson's fielder's choice plated Jermel Lomack to increase the margin to four.

The Rox managed to scratch a run in the ninth after Brachold blasted a solo homer, but it wasn't enough as the Rox dropped their second in a row.

Meanwhile, the Colonials continue to their torrid pace, having won 12 of their last 13.

Sampson conceded four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two over six and 1/3 innings of work in the loss. Brockton failed to provide much run support for their 22 year-old starter, as the offense only mustered three base-runners in the final six innings.

Brachold finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Valencia went 2-for-4 and stole his league-leading 34th base of the season. Chris Grossman and Mike Torres were the only other Brockton batters to record hits, as they each finished with a single in the game.

The Colonials now trail the Rox by just one half game in the Can-Am League second half standings and are also just a game and a half behind Brockton in the overall standings.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at 6 p.m. RHP John

Kelly (0-0, 1.29) gets the nod for the Rox, while RHP Chad Paronto (7-5, 4.10) will toe the rubber for Pittsfield.
