Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA - When the rain and fog finally lifted at Campanelli Stadium on Saturday night, it was the Surf which had washed away the Rox in a 4-0 shut out victory. The game was delayed three times, twice by rain, and once by fog as Brockton was held scoreless for the fifth time this season.
Atlantic City threatened to break open the game early on, scoring two runs in the first two innings. However the Surf left 12 runners on base through the first five innings as Rox starter RHP Greg Bunn wiggled out of some tough situations. Bunn lasted 3.2 innings and had his short outing broken up by a 23 minute rain delay in the top of the second inning and a 21 minute rain delay in the bottom of the third.
Atlantic City used three pitchers to combine for the shutout. RHP Derek Barrows made his first start of the year and pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Relievers RHP Derek Duclos and RHP Walker Whitley combined to pitch the final four innings. At one point, the Surf sent down 12 Rox batters in-a-row.
Late in the game, fog began to roll in at the stadium. With one out in the top of the ninth inning, Surf 2B Brad Thoma hit a fly ball to right field which Rox RF Jud Thigpen never saw. Thoma reached with a single and the teams were pulled off the field in a fog delay which lasted 31 minutes. When play was stopped, Rox CF Eugene Julien was not visible from the dugouts.
Brockton was shut out for the fifth time this season. The Rox and Surf will finish the weekend series on Sunday at 5:05 PM. LHP Rolando Viera (2-7, 3.78 ERA) is scheduled to start for Brockton against RHP Rory Shortell (5-2, 5.58 ERA) of Atlantic City.
