New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - A three-run first inning proved to be all the offense the New Jersey Jackals (6-13, 31-35) needed to support starter Isaac Pavlik in a 4-2 win against the Ottawa Rapidz (7-12, 20-46) on Friday night in front of 3,545 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Pavlik (6-4) hurled a gem, allowing two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. The left-hander walked one and struck out one as he earned the win. Jackals closer Rusty Tucker also played a key role in the victory, setting down the last five Ottawa batters of the game in order to secure his league-leading 17th save of the season. The save also ties him with former Jackal Mike Hartung for the team's single-season record, which was set in 1998.

For the fourth straight night, the Jackals jumped out to a first-inning lead, plating three runs against Ottawa starting pitcher Adam Hawes to gain an early advantage. Leadoff hitter Marcus Sanders reached on an error by Rapidz 3B Jake Daubert and scored two batters later when 1B Juan Tejeda doubled to the gap in left center to make it a 1-0 game. Later in the inning, back-to-back RBI singles by 3B Chris Kelly and C Matt Lauderdale put the Jackals up 3-0.

Pavlik allowed just one hit until the Rapidz plated their first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. LF Jereme Milons began the frame with a double before scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of DH Nate Hall to cut the Jackals' lead to 3-1.

In the eighth, the teams exchanged runs to finalize the scoring. In the top of the inning, Ottawa RF Pete Pirman led off with a double and later scored on a Tucker balk to cut the Rapidz deficit to 3-2. However, the Jackals would add some insurance as they regained a two-run lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by RF Marcos Rodriguez.

For Ottawa, Hawes (4-8) took the loss, allowing three runs - two earned - on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. In the contest, the first five hitters in the Rapidz order were a combined 0-20 at the plate.

The Jackals and Rapidz conclude their three-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. when New Jersey right-hander Aaron Tressler (2-6, 5.83 ERA) takes the hill against Ottawa righty Tanner Watson (2-4, 5.00 ERA). If you can't make it out to Yogi Berra Stadium, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
