Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (August 3, 2008) - The start of Sunday's series finale between the Brockton Rox and Atlantic City Surf was delayed 47 minutes due to heavy thunderstorms in the Brockton area. Following the rain, the Atlantic City Surf pounded out eight runs on nine hits off of Rox starter LHP Rolando Viera, and took the weekend series two games to one with a 9-2 victory.
Viera took his eighth loss of the season, and was outpitched by Atlantic City RHP Rory Shortell who won for the sixth time this season and lasted eight innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits while striking out seven. Brockton's only runs in the game came on an RBI by RF Nick Vardaro in the second inning and a solo home run by DH Jud Thigpen in the fourth.
Atlantic City scored in five different innings and only left four runners on base, contrary to the first two games of the series when the Surf stranded a total of 26 runners in two games. Surf 1B Joe Burke led the way with four hits, while SS Anthony Granato and RF Josh Burrus each drove in two runs.
Brockton will welcome the Quebece Capitales to Campanelli Stadium for a four-game series to begin on Monday night. RHP Wayne Lundgren will start for the Rox. Monday's first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
