(LITTLE FALLS, NJ) Sunday, August 3, 2008 - Trying to avoid the series sweep, the Ottawa Rapidz took on the New Jersey Jackals Sunday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The home team came back from behind twice to earn their third straight win against the Rapidz, this time by a score of 5-2.
Both teams got on the board once in the third inning to begin the scoring. Jereme Milons lead off the inning for the Rapidz with a single and later came in to score when Juan Infante hit into a fielder's choice. Andrew Larsen and Marcus Sanders both singled to manufacture a run for the Jackals.
Ottawa took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning with Milons walking to lead off the inning. Milons then advanced to second on Nate Hall's sacrifice bunt and then scored on a stand up double by Jared Lemieux.
Back-to-back one-run innings gave the Jackals a 3-2 lead late in the game. Zach Smithlin led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two out, Juan Tejeda doubled off the wall to score Smithlin to even the score at two. Smithlin produced the third Jackals run in the bottom of the seventh with a single, scoring Matt Lauderdale who was on base with a double to start the inning. The Jackals added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.
Tanner Watson (2-5) suffered the loss for the Rapidz pitching 7.2 innings the allowing five runs (all earned) on 10 hits, one intentional walk, and struck out three batters. Aaron Tressler (3-6) earned his third win of the season for the Jackals. The former Toronto Blue Jays prospect allowed two runs (both earned), five hits, walked one batter and added three strikeouts in eight innings. Rusty Tucker pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save of the season, his third of the series.
The Rapidz now return home for a seven-game home stand against the Sussex Skyhawks and the Brockton Rox. The first game against the Skyhawks on Monday, August 4 will feature "Break the Attendance Record Night", presented by East Side Mario's.
