Brockton - Derek Barrows found himself in two unfamiliar situations this week. On two occasions, Barrows started at shortstop two games against Ottawa, and performed admirably in place of Anthony Granato. Last night he made his first start on the hill, and was brilliant, working five shutout innings, as the Surf won the middle game of the three game set 4-0, in a Can-Am League game Saturday night. The Surf struck first in the first and second innings, scoring one run in each off of starter Greg Bunn (1-2). SS Anthony Granato led off the game with a walk and stole second, his team leading 20th of the season. RF Josh Burrus, who hit .337 in July, slapped a double down the left field line to plate Granato. In the second, 2B Brad Thoma singled with one out, and advanced to third on a single by the CF Lucas Taylor. Granato was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. 1B Eddie Kim drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Thoma, and giving the Surf a quick 2-0 lead.

The Surf scored again in the fifth inning, when Taylor reached second base on an error, and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Granato then drove him in with an RBI single. The Surf scored their final run in the 9th inning, when Granato again delivered, this time with a double to center field that scored Thoma. It was all the run support Barrows (1-2) would need, as the righty earned his first win of the season with his five innings of shutout ball. He allowed four hits and struck out one. Relievers Derek Duclos and Walker Whitley were equally as impressive, as both threw two scoreless innings to shut the door on the Rox. Granato had the big day at the plate for Atlantic City, going 3-for-4 with two RBI?s. Thoma also had a pair of hits, and scored two of the Surf's four runs. The win helped keep the Surf in first place, one game ahead of the Quebec Capitales. Tomorrow the Surf sends Rory Shortell (5-2) to the mound for the rubber game of this three game series. Brockton will counter with their lefty Rolando Viera.
