Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - Nashua used a four-run fifth inning and three-run sixth to open up a 9-1 lead before holding onto the 9-2 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes in a rain-shorted affair on Sunday afternoon at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
The game was called in the bottom of the sixth when a second rain delay caused the field to be deemed unplayable. The first delay came with one out in the top of the sixth and lasted 43 minutes before the teams squeezed in two outs. Isaac Burkett was strong for the Pride, pitching five plus innings while giving up two runs (both earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Alex Trezza contributed a solo home run while Mike MacMillan drove in the Tornadoes' other run with a bunt single.
Nashua manufactured a third-inning rally with a timely hit-and-run executed by Ervin Alcantara and Chris Torres. With Alcantara on the move from first, Torres found the hole left by a vacated Omar Pena. Then with runners at the corners, Vinny Pennell scorched a hot shot to first base that got by Chris Colabello to score Alcantara to make it 1-0. Two outs later, Argenis Tavarez singled to left-center, scoring Torres for the 2-0 lead.
Worcester cut the lead in half when MacMillan's two-out bunt single plated Pena to make it 2-1.
The Pride responded with four runs in the fifth for the 6-1 lead. Tavarez made it 3-1 when his RBI groundout scored Pennell for the 3-1 score. Bryan Duplissie was hit by a pitch then Mike Torres crushed a three-run home run to straight away center for the five-run margin.
Alcantara sparked a three-run sixth inning with a double and steal of third before scoring on Trezza's throwing error. Nashua's scoring was capped off when Sandy Almonte's two-run double plated Chris Torres and Pennell.
Trezza did hit the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth over the center field wall for the 9-2 final. It proved to be final pitch of the game as the skies opened up for a second time and after a 16 minute rain delay, the game was called.
The Tornadoes now look ahead to a series vs. Atlantic City which will have a major implication in the second-half standings. Junior Guerrero takes the hill for Worcester; he will be opposed by Rory Shortell. It is also Guaranteed Win Night while Tuesday is Mouse Pad Giveaway! Monday-Wednesday will be "Tanks 4 Tickets," with $4 Grandstand and Box tickets and $1 hot dogs!
