Brockton Rox News Release
Augusta, N.J. - LF Melvin Falu was 2-for-4 with an RBI but the Brockton Rox lost a one-run contest to the Sussex Skyhawks, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Skylands Park.
The Skyhawks (19-16) crossed the plate first in the first inning when LF Kraig Binick was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. He then scored on CF Carl Loadenthal's RBI groundout. Sussex would add two to their total in the second inning on a run-scoring triple by 3B Nick Giarraputo and a sacrifice fly from RF Kade Keowen.
The Rox (20-14) were shut down by Sussex starting RHP Dan Berlind. Berlind threw seven scoreless innings, scattering seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Before Brockton could get on the board, the Skyhawks took a 4-0 advantage in the seventh on another sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of Loadenthal.
Against reliever Tim Stringer in the eighth, Brockton's bats finally broke through, plating three runs on four hits. Falu and 3B Phillip Cuadrado each singled home a run, while RF Keith Brachold chipped in with a sacrifice fly.
The Rox could only muster a two-out single in the ninth by SS Dominic Ramos off Sussex closer Duaner Sanchez, but he was stranded there as Sanchez earned his tenth saves in 11 opportunities.
Berlind (2-1) picked up the win with his stellar outing while Rox starting RHP Mike Smith (3-3) dropped the decision. Smith also pitched seven innings, but allowed all four Sussex runs on ten hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Falu was joined by Ramos, 2B Derek Kinzler and 1B Clyde Williams with two hits on the afternoon. LHP Brad Hertzler threw a perfect eighth for the Rox out of the bullpen. C Chris Grossman did his job defensively, throwing out three would-be base-stealers in the contest in four chances.
Brockton left seven runners on base in the game and also had two runners cut down at home plate in the seventh inning. The Rox had four hits that inning, but could not score due to the defense of the Skyhawks.
Game three of this split five-game series will take place back in Brockton at Campanelli Stadium on Monday night. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. and it will be Brockton LHP Logan Williamson (0-1) making the start against Sussex RHP Mike Vicaro (2-0).
