Sussex Skyhawks News Release

The Sussex Skyhawks (19-16) celebrated America's Independence Day with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Brockton Rox (20-14) at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park on Sunday. After scoring the first four runs of the game, Sussex relied on three relievers in the eighth and ninth innings to hold off a three-run Brockton rally. RHP Dan Berlind threw his best game of the season, lasting seven scoreless innings while scattering seven hits and three walks and fanning four.

The Skyhawks opened the scoring in the first inning when LF Kraig Binick walked, stoled second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by SS Chase Fontaine and scored on an RBI groundout by CF Carl Loadenthal. In the second, 3B Nick Giarraputo laced an RBI triple over Brockton CF Chris Valencia's head and later scored on a sacrifice fly from RF Kade Keowen to make it 3-0 Sussex.

Neither team threatened seriously again until the seventh. In the top half, the Skyhawks threw two runners out at the plate on consecutive plays to preserve the shutout for the time being; Loadenthal provided the first assist and Binick supplied the second. In the bottom half, the home team was able to push one run across when Loadenthal lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to put the 'Hawks ahead 4-0.

RHP Tim Stringer replaced Berlind and labored through a three-run eighth but handed a one-run lead over to LHP Jared Locke in the ninth. Locke retired the first two batters of the inning, and RHP Duaner Sanchez notched the save by inducing a flyout to left field after surrendering a single to his first batter. Berlind was credited with the win, and Brockton starter RHP Mike Smith took the loss.

The Skyhawks will now follow the Rox up to Brockton, Mass. for a three-game set in the Bay State, but the team will return to Sussex County on Thursday to begin a home series with the expansion Pittsfield Colonials. Friday night's game is Military Appreciation Night; Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 Chevy sponsored by the National Guard will be on display at Skylands Park, and there will be fireworks following the conclusion of the game. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., and tickets are still available.
