Brockton Rox News Release
(Little Falls, N.J. - July 16, 2011) - The New Jersey Jackals (27-20) took their first lead of the series against the Brockton Rox (26-20) after scoring four unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back on the way to winning the final game of the first half 13-2.
Freddy Flores (4-3) took the loss for Brockton after giving up eight runs on eight hits in five and 1/3 innings. However, the Rox defense committed four errors behind Flores, leading only two of the eight runs to be earned.
The trouble for the Brockton fielders started in the second frame when an error by Melvin Falu allowed Mike Jones to reach base with only one out. After Flores struck out Nick Giarraputo for out number two, the Jackals collected four straight hits, including a two-run homer by Kris Sanchez and a two-run double by Argenis Reyes, making the score 4-0.
After scoring once more in the fourth and again in the fifth, Falu's second error of the ballgame led to two more unearned runs in the sixth, as New Jersey mounted an 8-2 lead.
Things fell apart for the Rox in the next two innings, as the Jackals extended the lead to 13-2, scoring five runs on five hits and two more errors.
Bobby Gagg (1-0) threw well in his first start for the Jackals, after making 13 straight appearances out of the bullpen to open the season. Gagg lasted a season high five innings, picking up his first win, while allowing two runs on seven hits.
The only tally for Brockton came on a two-run blast by Dominic Ramos with two outs in the top of the fifth.
A trio of relievers finished the job for New Jersey, holding the Rox scoreless over the final four frames. Steve Fox, Jared Locke and Stephen Clyne allowed only three total base runners and struck out five to cement the victory.
With the win the Jackals finish the first half in second place, just one half game ahead of Brockton in the Can-Am League standings and also snap the Rox season best winning streak at nine games.
The Rox open the second half with a 5:05 p.m. affair against the New York Federals Sunday evening. Julian Sampson gets the call in the first of seven games during a week long homestand at Campanelli Stadium.
