St. Cloud Rox News Release
Rochester, MN - The St. Cloud Rox scored three times in the ninth inning Monday night to overcome a one-run deficit and defeat the Rochester Honkers 7-5 at Mayo Field. The Rox (14-11, 31-27) took the lead in the ninth off a two-RBI triple from Boo Vazquez with one out to score Eric Loxtercamp and Robert Youngdahl, and put St. Cloud ahead.
Chris Paul led the Rox with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate Monday night as he also drove in three runs and scored the first run of the game in the first inning off an RBI double from Clay Ardeeser. The Honkers answered back with two in the bottom of the first, but the Rox got both back in the top of the fifth when Paul singled to left field to score Loxtercamp and Youngdahl.
After Rochester scored twice in the sixth and the teams each tallied a run in the eighth, the stage was set for Vazquez's triple to left center in the ninth that was just out of the reach of Honkers center fielder Ryan Boldt to put the Rox ahead, 6-5. Vazquez then scored in the very next at-bat off a single from Chris Paul to make it 7-5 going in to the bottom of the ninth.
Kevin Burgee picked up the win (5-2) on the mound for the Rox as he recorded the final two outs of the eighth and shut down the Honkers in the ninth while allowing just one hit. Nick McCarty took the start for the Rox and was relieved by Ben Lumsden in the sixth after allowing three earned runs on six hits through 5.2 innings. Lumsden threw 1.2 innings of relief while striking out two and allowing a run.
The Rox and Honkers will play again tomorrow night at Joe Faber Field beginning at 7:05 p.m. as part of a six-game home stand for the Rox where they will play one game with the Honkers and one with the Mankato MoonDogs before playing two, two-game series' with the Waterloo Bucks and Eau Claire Express.
