St. Cloud Rox News Release
Bismarck, ND - St. Cloud (22-6) won its fourth straight half championship after a 7-0 shutout against Bismarck (10-19) and the Rox have clinched a playoff spot.
The Rox won the second half of the season in 2019, then after the pod season in 2020, won both halves in 2021 to continue their dominant stretch. St. Cloud has the best record in the Northwoods League in the regular season since 2019 at 143-65.
Joe Battaglia (Southern University) led the way on the bump as the Rox earned their fourth shutout of the season. Battaglia threw six scoreless frames and got out of two jams late to get St. Cloud to the late innings.
The game was scoreless until the fifth when the Rox broke it open with three runs. Brice Matthews (Nebraska) started the rally with a double in the fifth, one of his three hits on the evening.
St. Cloud added a few runs of insurance in the sixth and the eighth. Trevor Austin (Mercer) drove in a run in each inning, finishing the game with three runs driven in to bring his season total to 23.
In the ninth, the Rox finished it off with the debut from Tyler Cornett (West Texas A&M). Cornett came in and got three quick outs, including back-to-back strikeouts to finish off the game and lock up a postseason berth for St. Cloud.
