La Crosse Loggers News Release
The La Crosse Loggers fell short in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel last night in St. Cloud against the Rox.
Eldridge Armstrong (San Diego State) made his first start for the Loggers, tossing a solid 4.0 innings, surrendering one earned run on 2 hits and 5 strikeouts. Garret Rennie (San Diego), Edward Berry (Swarthmore College), and Russell Derbyshire (Lousiana-Monroe) all pitched in relief, throwing 4.0 scoreless innings collectively.
The Rox offense produced runs in the 1st and 4th innings. The first run came on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Austin (Mercer), scoring John Nett (St. Cloud State), who reached third base on an error. The second run was the result of a wild pitch, plating Ethan Mann (New Mexico State), who reached on a walk.
Brady Prewitt (Colorado State-Pueblo)spearheaded the Rox offense, going 3-3 with a double. Brice Matthews (Nebraska) also played well, collecting 2 hits on the evening.
Matthew McClure was the story of the contest, pitching brilliantly for St. Cloud. The 6'6 right-hander nearly went the distance, tossing 8.0 innings while only allowing a run on 4 hits and 4 strikeouts. Chase Grillo (Washington State) then closed it out, recording his 8th save of the season and keeping his scoreless streak alive through 9 games.
The only run for the Loggers was manufactured in the 7th inning, coming from a sacrifice fly by Coby Morales (Washington), scoring Carson Hornung (South Carolina) who reached on a triple. Hornung extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Lumberman return home for a two-game series against the Duluth Huskies, beginning Friday, July 1st. To kick off July, it will be "Military Appreciation night" and a "Fireworks Extravaganza" at Copeland Park, presented by OptumServ. As always, current or former military members receive free admission by showing a military ID. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm CT.
