ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (31-25) kicked off June with a victory as it knocked off the Nashville Sounds (17-37) Saturday night by a final score of 8-5.

Center fielder Engel Beltre started the Express offense in style, taking a 1-1 offering from Nashville starter Tyler Thornburg into the visiting bullpen for his first homer of the season. After a walk, first baseman Chris McGuiness kept the offense rolling with a double off the base of the right field wall two batters later to plate another run. The E-Train capped the inning with a third run as McGuiness scored from third on a double play, giving Express starter Martin Perez a three-run cushion entering the second.

Perez got some help from his defense in the second as Beltre added to his impressive night with a spectacular catch to end the frame, robbing Sounds first baseman Hunter Morris of a home run at the center field wall.

The Sounds got one run back in the top half of the third when shortstop Josh Prince would not be denied a long ball, leading off with a solo shot for the first Nashville hit, cutting the lead to 3-1.

Round Rock countered in the bottom of the frame on left fielder Aaron Cunningham's sacrifice fly that plated McGuiness after the first baseman led off the inning with his second double of the night.

Perez's night would get rough as the southpaw worked himself into a jam in the top of the fifth, loading the bases after retiring the first two batters. The left-hander buckled down, limiting the Nashville offense to just one run that crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Right fielder Jim Adduci put two more runs on the board for the Express in the bottom of the sixth when two runners came around to score on his single to right. Designated hitter Robinson Chirinos crossed the plate from second while second baseman Yangervis Solarte came home on a throwing error by Sounds right fielder Cole Garner.

Nashville would not go quietly as the Sounds cashed in off Express reliever Yoshinori Tateyama. With two on and one out, center fielder Caleb Gindl connected on a 1-2 pitch and launched it over the right field wall for a three-run shot, pulling the Sounds within one at 6-5.

Round Rock put two insurance runs on the board in the bottom half of the eighth, setting the stage for closer Cory Burns in the ninth.

Leading 8-5, Burns set down the side in order, striking out two to nail down his 12th save of the season. Perez (2-1) picked up the win, while Thornburg (0-7) suffered the loss.

The Express continues a four-game set with the Sounds Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. Round Rock will send right-hander Josh Lindblom (5-0, 2.15 ERA) to face Nashville starter Zach Kroenke (2-7, 5.18 ERA).
