Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (9-10) powered their way to a 9-2 victory over the Iowa Cubs (9-10) on Monday night at Dell Diamond. E-Train 2B Josh Wilson and CF Jared Hoying each recorded a home run in the lopsided win.
Round Rock starter RHP Dillon Gee (1-2, 4.50) earned the win after five solid innings on the mound. The righty surrendered just two runs, only one of which was earned, on a total of seven hits while striking out three. Iowa RHP Seth Frankoff (0-1, 4.05) took the loss following a performance in which he surrendered six runs, only four of which were earned, on seven hits in 4.2 innings. He struck out five and walked one.
The visitors snatched an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. 3B Tommy La Stella led things off with a single before 2B Ian Happ followed up with a one-out single of his own. In the next plate appearance, DH Jeimer Candelario grounded into a fielder's choice out that eliminated Happ at second base. As Candelario charged down the line, E-Train SS Doug Bernier made an errant relay throw, resulting in La Stella racing home with the game's first run.
Another costly mistake led to a trio of Express runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs in the inning, LF Travis Snider singled before Hoying worked a walk. In the next at-bat, RF Cesar Puello lined a single to shallow center field. I-Cubs CF Todd Glaesmann mistimed his dive, resulting in the ball skipping all the way to the wall while Puello sprinted home to give the Express a 3-1 advantage.
In the second, Bernier singled but was erased at second on a Luis Marte fielder's choice. In the next at-bat, Wilson notched his first home run of the year, a line drive shot that crashed into the berm in left field, extending the E-Train lead to 5-1.
Iowa doubled their run total in the fourth inning. C Taylor Davis singled then moved to second on a fielder's choice. Two hitters later, Glaesmann collected an RBI single. Round Rock picked the run right back up in the fifth thanks to a solo Hoying home run.
The Express added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Again with two outs, 1B Ronald Guzman collected a walk before advancing all the way to third on a throwing error by La Stella that also resulted in Bernier reaching first base safely. Marte and Wilson then teamed up for a pair of RBI singles, extending the advantage to 8-2.
The final E-Train run came in the ninth inning. DH Preston Beck reached first base safely on a throwing error by I-Cubs SS Ozzie Martinez, the team's fourth error of the night. After back-to-back singles courtesy of Snider and Hoying, Puello drove Beck home with a groundout.
Rehabbing Texas Rangers RHP Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless ninth inning, enticing PH Stephen Bruno to fly out before striking out La Stella. Following a walk to 1B Chesny Young, Dyson struck out Happ to end the game. The righty needed 19 pitches to complete the inning, with nine landing in the strike zone.
Round Rock closes out their eight-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Iowa Cubs. Express RHP Eddie Gamboa (1-1, 4.66) is scheduled to take the mound opposite Cubs RHP Williams Perez (0-2, 11.00). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
