New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Ramon Torres had three hits, including an RBI triple, and Corey Toups drove in three runs to lead the Omaha Storm Chasers to a 7-5 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Tuesday afternoon.
Omaha earned a split of the four-game series, and the Baby Cakes settled for a split of their eight-game homestand.
The teams traded first-inning runs, with Jorge Soler slugging a home run in the top half against Odrisamer Despaigne, and New Orleans answering on Destin Hood's RBI double in the bottom half to score Steve Lombardozzi, who had three singles.
Hood drilled his third home run of the season and second of the series with two outs in the third inning to give the Baby Cakes a short-lived 2-1 lead.
The Storm Chasers came back with two runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Torres tied the game with his triple into the right field corner, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Toups.
Parker Morin stretched the Omaha lead to 5-2 in the sixth with a bases-loaded double, but the 'Cakes responded on Ramon Cabrera's two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to draw within a run. Cabrera also doubled and walked on the afternoon.
Eight batters came to the plate in the top of the eighth against Hunter Cervenka as Omaha stretched its lead back to three runs courtesy of a two-run single by Toups.
Three Storm Chasers relievers combined to limit New Orleans to two hits over the final three frames. Omaha committed two errors in the ninth, allowing the 'Cakes to score a run on a Tomas Telis sacrifice fly before Al Albuquerque recorded his second save to nail down the win for starter Luke Farrell (3-1), who scattered four runs - three earned - and eight hits across six innings.
Despaigne (0-1) was unable to last through five innings for the third time in as many starts and suffered the defeat.
Following the season's first off day on Wednesday, the Baby Cakes open a five-game series in Nashville on Thursday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
