Reno Aces News Release
El Paso, TX. - The Reno Aces defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas for the second time in as many days this evening by a score of 12-1. The Aces offense set the tone early, posting five runs in the top of the first inning. Ketel Marte, baseball's leader in hits, finished the game 4-for-6 with two doubles, a triple and a single. His season total now sits at 35, and his hit streak is now at 12 games.
The Aces would send all nine batters to the plate in the top of the first inning. Ildemaro Vargas led off the top of the first with a four-pitch walk. Ketel Marte wasted little time, blasting the second pitch he saw for a double to put runners on the corners with no outs. Two hits and two walks later, the Aces would walk away after their first at-bats with a 5-0 lead.
Newly acquired RHP Joel Payamps made his Triple-A debut tonight, taking the place of Silvino Bracho who was recalled to the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier in the afternoon. The 23-year-old right-hander scattered six hits over six innings, allowing no runs. Payamps had never pitched at any level higher than Class A Advanced as a member of the Visalia Rawhide. Entering tonight's contest, Payamps was 1-0 with a 4.90 ERA in three starts with Visalia.
Ketel Marte, riding a 12-game hit streak, finished the evening 4-for-6, missing a cycle by a few inches with his double off the top of the right-field wall in the top of the ninth inning. Seven of the nine Reno starters recorded multi-hit games. Marte (4), Reymond Fuentes (3), Hank Conger (3), Arcia, Rivero, and Jack Reinheimer each had two. The Aces finished with 18 total hits, tying their season high which was previously set on Opening Day in Fresno. Fuentes, Arcia, and Conger each finished the game with three RBI.
Jake Winston came into the ballgame to relieve Joel Payamps in the bottom of the seventh inning. The 23-year-old righty would allow just three hits while picking up his first career Triple-A save.
With the win, Reno is 4-2 against the Chihuahuas in 2017. The Aces have one more game against El Paso before heading home Thursday to take on the Fresno Grizzlies. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 5:35 PM from Southwest University Park. Season memberships are on-sale now at www.renoaces.com or by calling (775) 334-4700.
