Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - Entering Monday's game against Round Rock, the Omaha Royals had won eight in a row and their starter, Luis Mendoza had won three consecutive starts. Both streaks were halted, as the Express scored three runs in the second inning off Mendoza on their way to a 4-2 victory in front of 3,352 fans.
Mendoza (3-3), who posted a 1.00 ERA (two earned runs in 18 innings) during his winning streak, surrendered five hits in the second inning. The biggest of those was a two-run homer by the number-nine batter in Round Rock's lineup, Marcos Cabral. The first career Triple-A home run for the Express second baseman put the Royals in a 3-0 hole. Up until Cabral's homer over the left field wall, Mendoza had permitted only one home run in 19 innings this season with Omaha.
Round Rock lefty Polin Trinidad (3-2) worked out of some early jams - partly thanks to two mistakes on the bases by the Royals - and wound up pitching eight innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out one. In the bottom of the second, with runners on first and second and one out, Edwin Bellorin flied out to Jason Bourgeois in shallow center and Jai Miller was doubled off second base to end the threat.
Omaha got on the scoreboard in the third on Alex Gordon's RBI single off the base of the right field wall. However, Gordon was easily thrown out by Drew Locke trying to stretch it into a double. The only other run the Royals could muster against Trinidad came in the fourth, when Ed Lucas led off with a pop fly double off Bourgeois' glove. With one out, Lucas swiped third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Marc Maddox to make it 4-2.
Following Lucas' fourth inning double, Trinidad retired 12 consecutive Omaha batters through the end of the seventh inning. In the home eighth, Falu led off with a walk and took second on David Lough's bloop single into left. Trinidad retired Gordon on a fly out to right, but then uncorked a wild pitch to put runners at second and third with one out. Kila Ka'aihue fouled out to the catcher and Scott Thorman flied to right as the Royals finished the game just one-for-seven with runners in scoring position.
Casey Daigle earned his seventh save of the year for Round Rock by pitching a perfect ninth inning.
Omaha (27-22) was making a bid Monday for its first winning streak of at least nine games since the 1993 season, when the Royals strung together eleven consecutive victories. Instead, the Royals settled for a 9-3 homestand.
Starting with a 7:00 p.m. game on Tuesday, the Royals make their first visit of the season to New Orleans. The pitching matchup has Royals righty Gaby Hernandez (3-4, 6.59) vs. lefty Sean West, who will be making a rehab assignment start for the Florida Marlins.
After the four-game series at Zephyr Field, the Royals return to Rosenblatt next Saturday, June 5 for a 7:05 p.m. game vs. Oklahoma City. That opens an eight-game homestand, which includes a four-game set vs. Nashville. Entering Monday's play, the Royals were just a half-game behind the Sounds in the PCL American North division.
