
Rockies Purchase The Contact Of Infielder Jonathan Herrera

DENVER -The Colorado Rockies announced this afternoon that the club has purchased the contract of infielder Jonathan Herrera from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the active roster, the club optioned outfielder Dexter Fowler to Colorado Springs. Herrera will be in uniform for today's game at San Francisco (2:05 p.m. MDT).
Herrera, 25, has hit .286 (48-for-168) with 6 doubles, one home run and 11 RBI in 45 games with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Herrera has hit safely in 5 of his last 6 games for the Sky Sox prior to the promotion. He will be looking to make his first appearance in a Major League game since 6/13/08 at Chicago-AL. He played in 28 games for the Rockies in 2008, and hit .230 (14-for-61) with one double, one triple and 3 RBI. Herrera played both 2nd base and shortstop for the Rockies in 2008. He has played strictly for the Sky Sox over the past two seasons, and is a career .282 (764-for-2707) hitter over eight Minor League seasons, all in the Rockies organization. The native of Venezuela was originally signed by Colorado as a non-drafted free agent on April 6, 2002
Fowler, 24, is hitting .217 (30-for-138) with 5 doubles, 3 triples, 1 home run and 4 RBI in 46 games for Colorado this season. The switch-hitter is batting .350 (14-for-40) vs. left-handed pitchers, and .163 (16-for-98) against right-handers. Is a career .250 (149-for-547) hitter with 34 doubles, 13 triples, 5 home runs and 38 RBI over parts of three Major League seasons. Fowler has stolen 33 bases since making his Major League debut 9/2/08 vs. San Francisco, the most steals for any Rockies player since that date. Fowler has either been on the Rockies active roster or Major League disabled list since he first had his contract purchased from Double-A Tulsa on September 2, 2008. He will be looking to make his Triple-A debut for the Sky Sox.
The Rockies now have 38 players on the 40-man roster.
