Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Finishing out their series with Portland on a strong note, the Sky Sox routed Portland 20-8 at Security Service Field.
Chaz Roe on the mound, the Sky Sox offense was firing on all cylinders as the hurler notched the win.
The Sky Sox took the lead 3-0 in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Though Portland came within three runs at the end of the fourth, 5-2, the home team broke it open with a four-run fifth to go up 9-2.
The offensive explosion was highlighted by newcomer Dexter Fowler and first baseman Brad Eldred. His first career game for the Sky Sox, whom he skipped over in 2009 on his way to the bigs, Fowler went 4-for-4 with four runs, three RBI, two walks, and a home run. Eldred went 4-for-6 with two home runs, four runs scored, and seven RBI.
With the win, the Sky Sox improve to 23-27 while the Beavers fall to 19-32. Chaz Roe (2-7, 7.32) was credited with the win while Nathan Culp (0-2, 8.40) took the loss.
The Sky Sox will be hosting Reno tomorrow as ace Alan Johnson (4-1, 2.15) will take the hill against Bryan Augenstein (2-6, 6.12). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
Notables:
- The Sky Sox' 20 runs and 20 hits were both season highs. The last time the Sky Sox plated 20 runs was on August 12, 2008 at home against Tucson, winning 21-5. Their most recent 20 hit performance was on May 12, 2009 at home against Iowa, where they won 16-15 in ten innings on the strength of 22 hits.
- Three Sky Sox registered four hits tonight: Brad Eldred (4-for-6), Jay Payton (4-for-5), and Dexter Fowler (4-for-4).
- Dexter Fowler's first career Sky Sox and AAA appearance was one for the books. Reaching safely in all six plate appearances, Fowler batted 4-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBI, two walks, a home run, and a double.
- Brad Eldred registered the Sky Sox' first seven-RBI game since Matt Murton accomplished the feat on June 16, 2009. The last Sky Sox batter to plate seven runners at Security Service Field was Ryan Shealy on June 9, 2006 versus Fresno.
- Coming on in relief in eighth inning, Beavers third baseman Anthony Contreras was the first Beavers position player to pitch in a game against the Sky Sox since Brett Dowdy on June 27, 2009. Contreras was the third Beaver position player all-time to throw against the Sox. Matt Carson of Sacramento was the last position player to pitch against the Sox, doing so on July 24, 2009. Contreras was the only Beavers pitcher not to allow an earned run in today's match.
- Jay Payton's ground rule double in the eighth was stuck in the middle of the wall - caught in the divider between the top and bottom half.
