Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Collin DeLome's one-out RBI double in the bottom of the 10th gave the Round Rock Express a 7-6 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies in Wednesday night's series opener at The Dell Diamond. The Express (45-67) snapped a three-game losing skid and stopped a five-game losing streak in extra-inning home games. The Grizzlies (62-50) suffered their first loss in a series opener against Round Rock since 2007.
Brian Bogusevic opened the 10th with a single up the middle and stole second after Drew Locke struck out. The left-handed batting DeLome battled left-handed reliever Geno Espineli to a 2-2 count before lining a double into right-center. Bogusevic trotted home with the game-winning run, giving the Express their first victory in an extra-inning home game since defeating Iowa 1-0 in 10 innings April 20.
That made a winner of Mark Melancon (1-0), who joined the Express five days ago as part of the Lance Berkman trade. Melancon worked around a two-out single for a scoreless top of the 10th, logging one strikeout.
Espineli (5-3) took the loss, entering the game in the bottom of the 10th.
Round Rock scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first only to see Fresno tie the game in the top of the second. Express starter Polin Trinidad helped his cause in the bottom of the second, lining a two-out double into the right-field corner and scoring on J.B. Shuck's RBI single.
The Express pushed their lead to five runs in the sixth when German Duran drilled a three-run double down the left-field line and later scored on Edwin Bellorin's sacrifice fly.
That lead did not stand, though, as the Grizzlies tied the game with a five-run eighth. Brett Pill started the rally with a three-run homer, and Joe Borchard followed with a solo shot to center. Ben Copeland then walked, stole second and scored on Brock Bond's two-out single. The Grizzlies had the potential go-ahead run thrown out at home on the play.
Round Rock improved to 12-26 in one-run games; the Express have played more one-run contests than any team in the Pacific Coast League. It was the Express' eighth victory in its final at bat.
Trinidad turned in his best outing of the season only to see it unrewarded, failing to log his first victory since May 31 and his first victory at home since May 5. He allowed one run on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Gary Majewski allowed five runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings.
Fresno starter Kevin Pucetas surrendered six runs, five earned, on four hits and four walks with one strikeout over 5.2 innings. The Grizzlies bullpen limited Round Rock to only one hit after German's three-run double in the sixth before the two hits in the 10th.
Bogusevic was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored; he has reached safely in seven of his last nine plate appearances. Duran was 2-for-4.
Tyler Graham was 3-for-5 for the Grizzlies, while Pill and Jesus Guzman both had two-hit nights.
Round Rock and Fresno continue their four-game series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Josh Banks (8-7, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while right-hander Eric Hacker (12-5, 4.52 ERA) is slated to go for the Grizzlies.
The Round Rock Express, owned and operated by Ryan Sanders Baseball, LP, is the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros and a member of the Pacific Coast League.
