RH Omar Beltre (2-7, 2.50) vs. RH Fernando Rodriguez (3-4, 5.48)
TONIGHT: The RedHawks open an 8-game trip to Salt Lake and Colorado Springs with the first of a 4-game series against the Bees at Spring Mobile Ballpark in Salt Lake City. This is the only series of the year between these teams. OKC swept Salt Lake at The Brick in the only matchup in 2009, a 4-game series that began with OKC's Luis Mendoza throwing a 9-inning no-hitter on Aug. 14. Last night, the RedHawks used a 4-run fifth inning to avoid a sweep against the Iowa Cubs with a 5-1 win. Iowa took the season series 10-6. Michael Kirkman turned in his fifth straight quality start in improving to 11-3 and lowering his ERA to 2.99, third-best in the PCL. Omar Beltre gets the ball for OKC tonight against Bees righthander Fernando Rodriguez.
BROWN RETURNS: Former Bee Matt Brown returns to Salt Lake having hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games dating to July 18. He had a 16-game hitting streak snapped on Monday against Iowa. In the past 18 games, Brown is batting .343 (24-for-70) with 3 homers and 13 RBIs. He has 2 homers in the past 3 games and last night went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and a solo home run. Brown was on the DL with a strained left oblique from May 4-July 1.
DAVIS DOES IT AGAIN: Chris Davis has hit safely in all 3 games since being optioned by Texas on Thursday night, going 3-for-9 with 5 RBIs, 4 walks and 4 runs in that time. Davis owns a personal season-high 11-game hitting streak, during which he's 20-for-45 (.444) with 2 homers and 16 RBIs. Davis is second in the PCL in hitting (.353), fifth in on-base percentage (.408) and 11th in slugging (.555).
BOGGS' STREAK ENDS: Brandon Boggs had a 32-game on-base streak snapped with an 0-for-4 last night. Boggs has still reached base by hit or walk in 55 of his last 56 starts beginning May 24, the only breaks in the streak being last night and a strikeout as a pinch hitter June 19. Boggs is third in the league in walks with 68 and eighth in on-base percentage at .403.
GERMAN SEES STREAK END: Esteban German's 12-game hitting streak ended last night with an 0-for-3 plus a walk. The streak extended prior to a stint on the DL with a strained left hamstring. German has hit in 7 of 8 games since returning from the DL on Tuesday, going 11-for-30 with 6 RBIs and 5 walks.
OFF THE SCHNEID: The RedHawks earned their first August win last night. By starting August 0-2, OKC has lost the first 2 games of 4 straight months starting with May. The only month the RedHawks did not start 0-2 was April, when they dropped the opener, but won Game 2.
REDHAWKS ERA NO. 1: The RedHawks lead the PCL in team ERA at 3.79. Tacoma is second at 3.98. The RedHawks have allowed the fewest home runs (72) in the PCL, but surrendered 7 in the 4-game series against Iowa that ended last night. Fifteen of the 30 runs scored by Iowa in the last series were produced by home runs.
IOWA TOUGH ON PITCHERS: The RedHawks have a 3.49 ERA against all opponents other than the Iowa Cubs, working 836 innings while allowing 324 non-Iowa earned runs. Against Iowa, OKC pitched 136 innings while giving up 80 earned runs, a 5.29 ERA. An individual RedHawks pitcher has allowed a 2-homer game 11 times this season and each of the last 7 has been against the I-Cubs. A RedHawks pitcher has not allowed a 3-homer game this season.
FINAL OUT ELUSIVE: Since the All-Star break, RedHawks pitching has allowed 105 runs, 53 with 2 outs in an inning (50.5%). For the season, 183 of OKC's 473 runs allowed (38.7 %) have been with 2 outs.
ODDS AND ENDS: OKC is 14-14 in both series openers and series finales...the RedHawks are 13-6 against A.L. affiliates (8-4 vs. Omaha; 3-1 vs. Sacramento; 2-1 vs. Tacoma)...13 of OKC's previous 21 games have been against Iowa...the RedHawks went 5-8 in those recent Iowa games.
