ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Iowa Cubs (8-21) fought their way to a series victory over the Round Rock Express (11-21) with a 6-5 win in Monday night's series finale. The I-Cubs broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the top of the ninth inning to claim the victory.
E-Train RHP Nick Gardewine (2-1, 8.18) suffered the loss after giving up the game-winning run on three hits and a walk in 1.2 total innings of relief. The righty struck out three in the defeat. On the winning side, Iowa RHP Justin Hancock (2-2, 3.77) struck out a pair of Round Rock hitters in a perfect eighth inning.
Rehabbing Texas Rangers RHP Tim Lincecum took the mound for the first time in 20 months, allowing a pair of runs on a hit and a walk while striking out two. Lincecum threw 15 pitches with nine landing in the strike zone.
Iowa jumped out to an early lead as SS Mike Freeman opened the first inning with a leadoff single. After an Efren Navarro fielder's choice that eliminated Freeman at second base, RF Mark Zagunis was hit with an Austin Bibens-Dirkx pitch. The miscue proved to be costly as LF Bijan Rademacher homered in the next at-bat to give his team a 3-0 edge. Bibens-Dirkx finished the game having allowed three runs on three hits in 4.0 innings.
Round Rock rallied in the bottom of the second. 1B Tommy Joseph opened the frame with a double prior to an Andy Ibanez walk. C Cameron Rupp then stepped to the plate and launched a three-run homer over the wall in right-center field, leveling the contest at 3-3.
The E-Train grabbed a brief lead in the fourth as DH Christian Lopes worked a one out-walk before 3B Nick Noonan followed up with a single. An ensuing Joseph double put the Express up 5-3.
Lincecum then entered in the fifth inning, walking 3B Chesny Young on four pitches to begin his outing. Freeman doubled home Young in the next at-bat to put the Cubs back on top. Following a David Bote groundout that moved Freeman to third, Lincecum skipped a wild pitch past Rupp, allowing Iowa's fifth run to score. Lincecum recovered to strike out Navarro and Zagunis in order to complete his first rehab assignment of the year.
In the ninth, Gardewine issued a leadoff walk to DH Chris Gimenez, who was then replaced by pinch-runner Wynton Bernard. A Young single in the next at-bat drove allowed Bernard to race home with the go-ahead run.
SS Hanser Alberto attempted to spark a rally for the Express in the bottom of the frame by collecting a leadoff single, but was thrown out attempting to steal second base. Back-to-back walks by Lopes and Noonan gave Round Rock a chance, but Iowa RHP Dillon Mapes worked out of the jam to secure the win for the Cubs.
The Express now welcome the New Orleans Baby Cakes to town for a four-game series. Round Rock RHP Tyler Wagner (0-0, 4.50) is scheduled to start against New Orleans LHP Adam Conley (1-4, 6.84). First pitch at Dell Diamond is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Rehabbing Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with the Express in Tuesday's game.
