
Round Rock Bats Come Alive in 11-3 Win Over Sugar Land

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (5-4 | 49-34) took down the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (2-7 | 35-49) by a final score of 11-3 at Dell Diamond on Thursday night. The E-Train took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and ended the game allowing only two hits to Sugar Land.
Express reliever RHP Ryan Tepera (4-0, 0.00) earned the win after 1.0 inning of work and he did not allow a hit while striking out three. Space Cowboys starter LHP Nick Allgeyer (3-3, 6.60) walked away with the loss after giving up 10 runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings with five walks and five strikeouts.
Along the Train Tracks:
The good guys struck early after a two-run home run from SS Davis Wendzel put a 2-0 lead on the board for Round Rock after one inning.
In the third inning, Express C Sam Huff doubled and DH Blaine Crim drew a walk which had the pair on base for SS Jonathan Ornelas who launched a home run to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Round Rock lead was extended to seven in the fourth frame after a double from 3B Dio Arias and walk from CF Bubba Thompson had them aboard. Huff came up and his second double of the night scored two runs.
The Express put up four runs in the fifth inning after LF J.P. Martinez notched a RBI single, Thompson drew a bases-loaded walk and Wendzel smacked a two-RBI single to cap off the inning as the E-Train led 11-0.
Sugar Land broke up the no-hitter in the eighth inning. With one out, after C Luke Berryhill walked, RF Marty Costes singled. 1B Jon Singleton batted next and smacked a three-run home run to cut the score to 11-3 where the score stood final.
E-Train Excerpts:
Round Rock SS Davis Wendzel hit a home run in back-to-back games for the fifth time this season after his home run in the first inning tonight. He went 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBI and a run scored.
LF J.P. Martinez and C Sam Huff each had three hits. Martinez went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and a strikeout. Huff finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and four RBI. Huff is now 10-for-17 in his first four games since being optioned from the Texas Rangers on June 30.
The Express has never thrown a no-hitter or a perfect game in franchise history despite coming close on Thursday night. After starter LHP Taylor Hearn did not allow a hit for 2.2 innings, he turned it over to LHP Jake Latz for 1.1 frames of hitless baseball. RHP Ryan Tepera and RHP Ian Kennedy each tossed a hitless inning before RHP Yerry Rodriguez kept Sugar Land hitless in the seventh. Rodriguez allowed the first hit of the night with one out in the eighth and finished after 2.0 innings with three earned runs. RHP March Church tossed a hitless ninth inning to finish the game.
Next up: Round Rock will face the Sugar Land Space Cowboys in game four at Dell Diamond on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT. Express RHP Edwar Colina (1-0, 7.71) will face off against Space Cowboys RHP Jairo Solis (1-3, 8.44).
