CHIEFS PICK UP 3-2 OVERTIME WIN IN KELOWNA
SITTLER EARNS FIRST STAR WITH 33 SAVES WHILE WOODS TALLIES GAME-WINNER
KELOWNA, B.C. - Riley Woods' goal 3:19 into overtime lifted the Spokane Chiefs to a 3-2 win over the Kelowna Rockets Wednesday night in Kelowna, B.C. The win was the second-straight for Spokane over Kelowna in overtime this season, and Woods scored in his first game with the Chiefs since being acquired in a trade from Regina on Monday.
Neither team scored in the first period as each team put up ten shots in the first. Spokane had the only two power play chances in the first, and had a 53 second 5-on-3 advantage but failed to score. The Chiefs would convert their first power play opportunity of the second period though, as Kailer Yamamoto scored his team leading 23rd goal of the season from just inside the right circle at 10:36 to make it 1-0 Spokane. Tyson Helgesen would then score his 6th goal of the year just 35 seconds later to put the Chiefs up 2-0. Kelowna would get on the board with a goal at 18:01 to cut the Spokane lead to 2-1 after two periods.
The Rockets would pull even late in the third on a Riley Stadel goal off the rush at 16:17 of the period to tie the game at two and force overtime. In the OT, Jaret Anderson-Dolan fed the puck between the circles to an open Woods, who fired home his first goal as a Chief for the game winner. Kelowna out shot Spokane 35-22 in the contest, as the Chiefs power play went 1-for-4 and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Jayden Sittler picked up his 10th win of the year for Spokane and was named the first star of the game for his 33-save effort.
Spokane will head to Cranbrook, B.C. to open a home-and-home series with the Kootenay Ice of Friday night at 6 p.m Pacific time. Mike Boyle will have the call on 1510 KGA NW Sports Talk starting with the pre-game show at 5:30.
FORWARD CURTIS MISKE TRADED TO PRINCE ALBERT
CHIEFS PICK UP DRAFT PICK IN MOVE TO GET UNDER ROSTER LIMIT
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs announced on Monday that they have acquired a fourth round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for 19-year-old forward Curtis Miske.
"With the additions Riley Woods and Rykr Cole (in a trade with Regina announced Monday morning), we are over the WHL roster limit of 25 players and needed to move a player out," said Chiefs' General Manager Scott Carter. "Curtis will get the opportunity to play a bigger role in Prince Albert this year and moving forward, while we are able to acquire an asset for our scouting staff in the draft.
"We'd like to thank Curtis for his time in Spokane and wish him the best in Prince Albert."
Miske appeared in 154 games over three seasons with the Chiefs, scoring 22 goals and 36 assists for 58 points while picking up 70 penalty minutes. He recorded one goal and three assists in seven playoff games. He was originally a second round pick by Spokane in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
SPOKANE ACQUIRES PAIR OF FORWARDS FROM REGINA
RILEY WOODS AND RYKR COLE JOIN CHIEFS
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs announced on Monday that they had acquired forwards Riley Woods (pictured above) and Rykr Cole in exchange for Wyatt Sloboshan and a third round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.
"Riley is a skilled left wing with good offensive ability who will fit on our top two lines," said Chiefs' General Manager Scott Carter. "Rykr is a solid two-way player who can play on both wings and brings an edge to his game."
Woods, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound 18-year-old from Regina, had six goals and seven assists in 28 games with the Pats this season. Last year, as a 17-year-old rookie, he picked up nine goals and five assists in 31 games before recording two assists in nine playoff games. In the 2014-15 season, he piled up 59 points including 22 goals in 42 games with the eventual league champion Regina Pat Canadians of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. He was listed by Regina in 2015.
Cole, a 19-year-old from Moosomin, Saskatchewan, is a 166-game WHL veteran with 57 points (27 goals, 30 assists), 101 penalty minutes and a career +8 rating. The 6-foot, 185-pound winger matched Woods this season with six goals and seven assists for 13 points in 34 games. He adds extensive playoff experience with 17 games played and four goals. He was originally a third round pick by the Pats in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
