CHARLESTON, WV - The BlueClaws and West Virginia split a double-header on Monday at Appalachian Power Park with the Power taking the opener 4-1 and the BlueClaws the nightcap 1-0 behind six scoreless innings from Ramon Rosso.
The shutout win in the nightcap gave Lakewood (3-2/44-30) their 17th shutout of the year while the Power (4-1/41-30) dropped their first game of the second half.
Game One
West Virginia scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to top the BlueClaws 4-1 in the opener.
With two out and nobody on off reliever Andrew Brown (2-1), West Virginia got four straight hits to take the lead. Kyle Watson's two-run single broke the 1-1 tie while Lolo Sanchez followed with an RBI single of his own for a 4-1 lead.
West Virginia got the game's first run in the bottom of the second when a David Parkinson balk allowed Brett Pope to score from third. The balk snapped a stretch of 25 straight Parkinson scoreless innings and his streak of not allowing an earned run at 34.
The BlueClaws tied the game off Power starter Cody Bolton in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Quincy Nieporte. Bolton (3-0) earned the win, allowing just one run over six innings. Beau Sulser threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning for his fourth save.
Parkinson gave up one run in five innings and did not factor in the decision. He is now tied with teammate Will Stewart with a league-best 1.13 ERA.
Game Two
Ramon Rosso threw six scoreless innings and Connor Brogdon threw a 1-2-3 seventh for his first save as the BlueClaws topped the Power 1-0 in the nightcap.
The win was Lakewood's 17th shutout of the season, five off the franchise record. It was also their second shutout in three games and they continue to lead the minors in shutouts and with their team ERA of 2.60. In the last 10 seasons, only four teams, including both this year's BlueClaws and last year's BlueClaws (22) have thrown 17 shutouts in a full season.
Rosso (5-1) struck out four and has allowed one or no earned runs in all but two of his 12 starts this year.
The BlueClaws opened the scoring in the fifth inning on a SAC fly from Nick Maton, brining home Jesus Alastre.
Power starter Sergio Cubilete (2-4) gave up one run in 4.2 innings of work but took the loss. Brogdon's save was his first of the year after he had three with Williamsport in 2017.
The teams finish their three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 pm. LHP Will Stewart (6-0) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Gavin Wallace (5-1).
