Ross Named CL Pitcher of the Week
June 27, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - For the sixth time this season, a Myrtle Beach Pelican has taken home one of the Carolina League's weekly awards as Robbie Ross has been named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 20-26. The lefty dominated the Salem Red Sox on the road on Sunday, tossing six shutout innings of two-hit ball to pick up his league-leading eighth win.
Travel issues kept the Pelicans from arriving in Salem until 7:30 on Sunday morning before their 4:05 p.m. game. Ross was no worse for wear as he faced only one over the minimum until there were two outs in the sixth. An error, a single and a double steal put Ross in his first jam of the day. With Bryce Brentz at the plate representing the tying run, Ross blew him away with a strikeout to end the threat.
Ross likely would have pitched further into the game, but a seventh-inning rain delay ended his afternoon after six frames. In his first start since a 1-2-3 seventh inning in Tuesday's All-Star Game, the lefty allowed only two hits and struck out four without walking a batter. With the 4-1 win, the Nicholasville, KY native improved to 8-2, making him the first pitcher in the circuit to reach the eight-win mark. He was also the first hurler in the loop to get to five, six and seven wins.
Both Robbie Erlin (April 25-May 1) and Joe Wieland (May 2-9, May 23-29) have won Pitcher of the Week this season for the Pelicans before earning promotions to Double-A Frisco, but Ross has been on par with the pair. Yesterday's standout performance lowered his ERA to 2.67 and his WHIP to 1.13, both are the sixth-lowest in the Carolina League.
The lefty has been named an All-Star at three different levels over the past three seasons. Selected in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Rangers, Ross was superb with Short Season-A Spokane in 2009, ranking fourth in the Northwest league in ERA and WHIP.
He went 8-7 with a 2.59 ERA with low-A Hickory in 2010, earning the starting nod in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game before a July promotion to Advanced-A Bakersfield.
Entering the season as Baseball America's 19th-ranked Texas Rangers prospect, Ross has carried his success to Myrtle Beach. He began the 2011 campaign with 18 consecutive scoreless innings and was a key to the Pelicans winning the Carolina League Southern Division first-half title.
In addition to the four Pitcher of the Week awards, a Pelican has twice earned Player of the Week honors this year. Third baseman Mike Olt won the first weekly award of 2011 on April 18 and center fielder Ryan Strausborger took home the hardware on May 2.
The Pelicans play the middle game of their three-game road set at Salem tonight at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return home after Tuesday's noon game to begin a three-game series against the Kinston Indians. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. for all three games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
