June 27, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
- RHP Kennil Gomez (2-1, 2.36) at RHP Anthony Ranaudo (1-3, 2.78) -
ROSS HONORED: Pelicans starter Robbie Ross became the sixth Pelicans weekly award honoree this season when the Carolina League tabbed him Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his dominant Sunday afternoon effort against Salem. Over six innings, Ross blanked the Red Sox on two hits, stirking out four without a walk. His departure after 65 pitches was forced by a 46-minute rain delay following his last inning of work. Robbie's eighth victory put him back alone into the top spot in the Carolina League in the wins column.
FOR WHOM CHAD BELL TOLLS: Myrtle Beach righty reliever Chad Bell hadn't worked more than an inning and one-third of relief dating back to April 19 when he spun five brilliant innings of one-hit, eight-strikeout relief during the Pelicans' epic 23-inning loss to the Kinston Indians on June 12. Since then, Bell has gone off. The Knoxville, Tennessee native has allowed just two runs on seven hits over eight innings of relief and has struck out three batters in each of his three appearances. Bell earned his first save of the year Sunday at Salem with three innings of one-run relief to close out Robbie Ross's solid effort.
A NEW ANDRES: Perhaps Myrtle Beach's quietest bat this season has started to break out of its seasonlong funk. Infielder Andres James entered Saturday's finale with Potomac mired in an 0-for-17 slide but busted out with a 3-for-5 day that included two runs batted in, a total that matched his season tally. James continued on Sunday where he left off, ripping two hits, including a double for his first extra-base knock of the season, as part of a 2-for-4 day out of the leadoff spot. Though his average is still .189, it's climbed 34 points since the start of Saturday.
TURNING THE PAGE: With a victory in either of the final two games in this series, the Pelicans will earn a series victory over the Salem Red Sox on the road for just the second time in Boston's tenure in the Roanoke Valley. Myrtle Beach has not beaten Salem in a series at this ballpark since June 12-14, 2009.
