August 17, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves went to extra innings for the second straight game and this time, came out on top as they beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1 in the series opener at The Diamond on Tuesday night.
The Squirrels jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Joey Wentz. Simon Whiteman led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a Diego Rincones fly out. Whiteman scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Erie promptly tied the game in the top of the second against Squirrels starter Aaron Blair as Dylan Rosa, in his first game back from Triple-A Toledo, blasted a two-out solo home run to left. The home run for Rosa was his seventh.
The game remained tied into the 10th inning when the SeaWolves took their first lead of the night. Andre Lipcius was the free runner on second base. Rosa led off and singled up the middle, plating Lipcius for the go-ahead run.
In the Richmond 10th, Jacob Heyward was the free runner on second and Erie went with righty Joe Navilhon. Navilhon struck out both Luis Alexander Basabe and Brandon Martorano and induced a fly out to left off the bat of Shane Matheny to end the game, earning his second save of the season.
Gerson Moreno (5-2), who worked a scoreless ninth inning, earned the win.
The loss went to Joey Marciano (3-4) who allowed an unearned run in the top of the 10th.
Wentz took the no-decision allowing a run on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. It was the second straight start that Wentz got two out outs in the fifth inning before surrendering a base hit that forced him out of the game due to pitch limits. He tied a season-high with six strikeouts and tied a season-low with only one walk allowed.
Erie used a trio of relievers in Chance Kirby, Moreno and Navilhon to keep Richmond scoreless over the final 5.1 innings of the game.
