Richmond Roosters News Release
O'Fallon, Missouri - The Roosters won 12-6 on Saturday night, taking the first game of a series against the River City Rascals. The game was close until Richmond scored nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to put it out of reach.
Anthony Slagle scored the first run of the game when he led off the first inning for River City with a solo home run. Mike Madrid hit a RBI single in the same inning to give the Rascals a 2-0 lead. Kevin White cut the lead in half in the second when he got a solo homer of his own to make it 2-1. The Roosters took the lead in the fifth when the team got one run on a RBI double by Joe Rhomberg and another on a groundout by Mike Reese. That gave Richmond a 3-2 lead, but River City tied it up in the sixth when Anthony Slagle scored another run, this time on a passed ball by the catcher.
Richmond broke the game open in the seventh, running six runs across the plate. O.J. Garza started things with a two-run single to left. Tony Sanguinetti followed that up with a three-run double down the left field line. Kevin White singled in the final run of the inning with a hit to left to give the Roosters a 9-3 lead. The Rascals made it a five run lead in their half of the seventh when Tony Calderon doubled over the head of Kevin White to score a run, but the Roosters continued to put runs on the board with three more in the eighth. Kiley Vaughn hit his first homer as a Rooster with a two-run blast down the left field line and Mike Reese added a solo shot to stretch his hit-streak to 15-games and give Richmond a 12-4 lead. River City added a run in the eighth and another in the ninth but could never rally enough to catch up. Jesen Merle (3-3) got the win while Jon Kars (2-2) was the loser.
The Roosters and Rascals will play game two of the series on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. (Indiana time). Dan Caldwell (1-3, 4.09 ERA) will make his second appearance as a starter for Richmond against Tony Marsala (3-2, 5.74 ERA). The Roosters will return to McBride Stadium on August 9, to face the Ohio Valley Redcoats in a three-game series.
