Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Isaac Pavlik improved to a league best 6-0 as the New Jersey Jackals (19-11) won their sixth straight game, besting the Brockton Rox (15-13) 3-1 in a pitchers duel Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium.
Pavlik gave up just one run through eight frames, scattering six hits while striking out four and walking none. The only run the Rox offense managed against the southpaw was on an RBI double from Trey Hernandez in the seventh that plated Ryan Royster.
Hernandez went 2-for-3 and has now knocked in a run in his last two games.
Rox starter Julian Sampson (2-2) pitched valiantly in the loss, lasting a season high tying seven and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking three.
The Jackals first got on the board in the third frame, scoring two runs on RBI singles from Leonard Davis and Mike Jones with two outs.
Trailing 2-0, Sampson settled down in the middle innings, sitting down twelve straight Jackals at one point, before exiting in the seventh after walking two with two outs.
Brad Hertzler entered from the bullpen and walked the next pair of hitters, extending the New Jersey lead to 3-1 as the Rox pitching staff issued free passes to six of the final eleven batters.
Steve Fox (2) replaced Pavlik in the ninth frame and immediately walked Chris Grossman, but would recover to retire the next three straight, locking down his second save of the season.
The Rox have now left the tying or winning runs at the plate or on base in three consecutive contests, with 10-of-13 total losses coming by either one or two runs.
The series wraps up with a matinee finale Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The Rox will send righty Mike Smith (3-2) to the bump to face southpaw A.J. Wideman (0-2) as Brockton hopes to get back in the win column before an off day on Monday.
