Newark collects just six hits; Capitales erupt for six runs in fifth inning

QUEBEC, Canada - Karl Gelinas scattered five hits over seven innings, allowing just one run, and striking out four, leading the Quebec Capitales to an 8-2 victory over the Newark Bears Saturday night at Le Stade Municipal.

The win enabled Quebec to improve to 22-6 overall, while the Bears dropped to 16-13.

Gelinas (4-2) only allowed a solo homer to Todd Gossage in the third inning. It was Gossage's third homer of the season and his second in three games.

The Capitales broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth against Bears starter and loser Aaron Kalb (1-2).

Rene Levert had a two-run homer, Dan Barbaro had a two-run double and Robert Wagner closed out the rally with a two-run homer.

The Bears were silenced for a second straight night north of the border, collecting only six hits off three Quebec pitchers.

Daryle Ward drove in a run in the ninth inning for the Bears.

The Bears and Capitales complete their three-game series Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. start. After a day off Monday, the Bears return home to Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium to begin a three-game series with Pittsfield. All three games of the Pittsfield series begin at 5:35 p.m.
