Newark Bears News Release

QUEBEC, Canada - John Mariotti scattered four hits over six innings, striking out eight for his first win and Sebastien Boucher drove in four runs, leading the Quebec Capitales to a 7-2 win over the Newark Bears Friday night before 3,054 fans in Le Stade Municipal.

The loss dropped Newark to 16-12 overall and the Bears now trail the front-running Capitales (21-6) by 5 1/2 games in the Can-Am League standings.

The game was delayed for more than two hours by rain with first pitch coming at 9:13 p.m. and the game ending after midnight, capping a very long day for the Bears, who traveled from Newark to Canada after their win over Worcester Thursday night.

The Bears fell behind early, getting outscored, 4-0, over the first two innings. Bears starter Victor Gonzalez (0-2) had a tough time finding the strike zone and walked six batters in 1 2/3 innings of work. He also hit a batter, namely Boucher, with the bases loaded, driving in a run and ending his night, giving way to Eric Eden.

Meanwhile, Mariotti kept the Bears off balance for most of the night. Only Juan Martinez (2-for-4, RBI) and Tim Raines, Jr. (2-for-3) could manage anything off Mariotti. Three Capitales relievers limited the Bears to no runs and just one single over the final three innings.

Veteran designated hitter Pete LaForest had a two-run single in the second inning and had two hits for the winners.

Eden was a bright spot for the Bears, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two and striking out two, lowering his ERA to 2.66 in the process.

The Bears and Capitales continue their three-game series north of the border Saturday night, with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
