New Jersey Jackals News Release

Brockton, Mass. - Southpaw Isaac Pavlik won for the sixth time in seven starts as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Brockton Rox 3-1 to notch their sixth straight win on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium.

Pavlik, who entered the day as the Can-Am League leader in wins and strikeouts, allowed just one run on six hits in eight innings. He struck out four batters without issuing a walk and needed just 89 pitches to get through eight frames. Jackals' reliever Steve Fox finished the job, firing a scoreless ninth to notch his first save of the season.

New Jersey broke through against Brockton starter Julian Sampson in the second inning, plating the game's first two runs on a pair of two-out RBI singles by Leonard Davis and Mike Jones to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Brockton pulled within one in the bottom of the seventh when rookie first baseman Trey Hernandez split the outfielders with an RBI double to left center to make it a 2-1 game, but New Jersey capped the scoring with an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Sampson and reliever Brad Hertzler walked four batters in the frame to force in the Jackals' third run of the night.

Sampson (2-2) took the loss after yielding three runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings.

The Jackals and Rox conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw Aaron Wideman (0-2, 6.75 ERA) to the mound against Brockton right-hander Mike Smith (3-2, 3.05 ERA).
