Tornadoes and Colonials Split Doubleheader Friday Night
June 25, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Tornadoes walked off with a win in the first game of the doubleheader, winning 7-6, but the Colonials got the upper hand in the second game, 11-5.
Mark Minicozzi hit a walk-off single, plating Alex Nunez with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in game one after Abraham Nunez had tied the game with an RBI double. Worcester had a 5-0 lead in the game before the Colonials stormed back.
In the top of the seventh, Johnny Welch hit a grandslam, giving Pittsfield its only lead of the game at 6-5. Both closers factored into the decision after blowing the save, as Rick Asadoorian picked up the win (1-1) for the Tornadoes, while Matt Lyons (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
In game two, the Colonials took a two-run lead in the first before the Tornadoes did the same in their half of the inning. Mark Minicozzi got another RBI with a groundout, then Nick Salotti hit a three-run homer to put Worcester on top at 4-2.
Pittsfield scored nine runs over the last four innings of the ballgame, including one in the fifth (to take a 5-4 lead), two in the sixth, and four in the seventh. Worcester countered with a run in the ninth on a Salotti single, plating Chris Colabello.
Matt McDonald was issued a loss in his first decision for the Tornadoes in 2011, while T.J. Wink picked up the win and Mike Zenko the save (since it was a save situation when he entered the game in the fifth).
Worcester and Pittsfield will be back at it on Saturday night, as SpongeBob SquarePants comes to town for a 7:05pm first pitch. Game four of the series (and the final game between the teams in the season's first half) will be Sunday at 4:05pm.
