Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Rochester, N.Y. - On Friday of last week, Austin Romine was hit in the head with a fastball that prompted the ejection and subsequent suspension of Rochester Red Wings' pitcher Lester Oliveros. While he never hit the DL, he did not return to the field until Thursday night at the Red Wings' Frontier Field. Romine, who was felled after two big home runs hit by his teammates at PNC Field, posted six RBIs including his first career grand slam to lead his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) over the Red Wings (Minnesota Twins), 10-7. The victory gave the RailRiders the three-game series and their third rubber-match win of the season.
The game did not start well for SWB as Esmil Rogers allowed four extra-base hits and three runs in the first inning. Rogers failed to last three innings, but left with the lead thanks to the RailRiders' second-best frame of the season.
Rochester starter Jason Wheeler was chased in the seven-run frame with the highlight shot delivered by Romine, a two-out grand slam to center field that snapped a 3-3 tie.
The 7-3 advantage fell to a single score thanks to a two-run homer and a sac fly by Reynaldo Rodriguez in the third and fifth respectively. Again, Romine rose to the task. The catcher ripped a two-run single with two down in the seventh to chase one of the Twins' top prospects, Alex Meyer, while giving the RailRiders breathing room at 9-6.
Right-hander Diego Moreno (3-0) fired two innings of one-run ball for the win and southpaw Tyler Webb tossed two scoreless innings for his first save.
The RailRiders' six-game road trip shifts to Allentown as the IronRail series continues at Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia Phillies). The RailRiders will look to the rehabbing Ivan Nova (1-0, 1.50) against right-hander Jason Berken (3-4, 3.88). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It will be the RailRiders' first game of 2015 at Coca-Cola Park.
The Father's Day Legends Game will take place at PNC Field this coming Sunday featuring names like Reggie Jackson, Don Larsen and more. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m. in advance of a 2:05 p.m. first pitch. For more information please call (570) 969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
OFF THE RAILS:
The RailRiders' have won 15 of 17 on the road and stand a season-high-tying 10 games above .500 at 39-29.
SWB and Rochester have split their first 12 meetings. The IL North's top two teams will not meet again for two months.
