Buffalo Bisons News Release

Thursday's matchup between the Bisons and the IronPigs was set up to be a tremendous pitching duel between two of the game's future starts. It didn't disappoint.

Unfortunately, it was the Herd that ended up on the short side of a 3-0 loss to Lehigh Valley at Coca-Cola Park. Making his Triple-A debut, top Phillies prospect Aaron Nola bested Daniel Norris to give the IronPigs a 3-1 series win over Buffalo.

Nola worked five innings for the IronPigs, racking up seven strikeouts and keeping the Bisons off the board. The 22-year old fanned three of the first four batters he faced in his debut and allowed just four hits and a walk.

Norris also fanned seven batters, and kept pace with Nola into the fifth inning. But with two outs in the frame, the Bisons southpaw issued a four-pitch walk to Jordan Danks. The next batter, Jayson Nix doubled deep to the left-centerfield gap to open the game's scoring.

Lehigh Valley tacked on solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Cord Phelps hit his sixth double of the season to centerfield, scoring Darin Ruf for a late 2-0 lead for the IronPigs. Darin Ruf returns the favor by hitting an RBI single, giving the IronPigs a three-run cushion.

The defeat drops Daniel Norris to 1-6 on the season, despite not allowing more than two earned runs in any of his nine starts with the Herd. He two runs in 5.1 innings of work on Thursday.

The Bisons collected eight hits, but only one was for extra-bases in their 11th shutout defeat of the season. Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis had a single in five trips in his return to the Bisons on a Major League rehab assignment.

Buffalo will now look to bounce back as they head to Syracuse for a three-game series starting Friday. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
