Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights completed a three-game sweep of the Pawtucket Red Sox with an impressive offensive performance on Thursday night, as the team set season-highs with 15 runs, 15 hits, and 7 doubles in the 15-5 victory at BB&T Ballpark.
The Knights offense got off to a fast start as Micah Johnson led-off the bottom of the first inning with his fifth double of the season. The two-bagger was the first of three in the inning as George Kottaras and Tyler Colvin each notched RBI-doubles in the frame to contribute to the Knights five-run first inning.
After Colvin added an RBI-triple in the bottom of the third inning, the Knights added two more runs in the fourth frame to push their lead to 8-2.
The pair of PawSox runs came from Garin Cecchini, as the native of Louisiana hit a solo home run in the second inning and another in the fourth frame. Both long balls came off of RHP Shawn Haviland, but they would be the only runs allowed by the Knights starter on his way to earning the victory.
After Tyler Saladino put the Knights ahead 9-2 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, Matt Davidson would start another big inning in the bottom of the sixth by starting the frame with a lead-off walk. Back-to-back doubles by Matt Tuiasosopo and Trayce Thompson would follow before George Kottaras lifted a three-run homer to right field, giving the Knights a 13-2 lead.
The PawSox added three runs in the top of the eighth inning on one hit and three walks against Knights reliever Zach Phillips - snapping the lefty's nine-game scoreless streak.
The Knights would add two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning, pushing the lead to 15-5 and setting a new season-high with 15 total hits.
Every Knights starter would contribute at least one hit to the team's 15-hit total, but Kottaras and Colvin added most of the firepower for the Knights offense on Thursday night. Colvin tallied three extra-base hits including his first triple of the season, and Kottaras tallied a career-high six RBI.
With Thursday night's win, the Knights completed their first sweep of at least three games this season. The game was also the final scheduled matchup between the Knights and PawSox in 2015, with Charlotte winning the season series five games to one.
The Knights will complete their six-game homestand with a weekend series against the Indianapolis Indians starting Friday night. Terance Marin is set to make his second start as a Knight in the 7:05 p.m. matchup on Fireworks Friday, presented by BB&T and 107.9 The Link.
