Rome's Pitching Stifles RiverDogs Again

CHARLESTON, SC - Three Rome Braves pitchers combined on a 2-0 shutout over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action on Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park with a crowd of 3,008 on hand.

The RiverDogs fell out of first place with the loss and now stand at 56-43 (17-15 in the second half) on the season. Rome's second straight win puts them at 36-66 (18-14 in the second half). The shutout was the sixth time this season Charleston has been held scoreless, the fourth time in July.

"You have to give Rome credit," said RiverDogs manager Carlos Mendoza. "Their pitching was fantastic and we just couldn't get anything going offensively. Will Oliver did a great job for us, six solid innings, saved the rest of the bullpen. We are going to go out there and get them tomorrow."

The Braves grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning off starter Philip Wetherell (4-4). Tony Mueller (2-4, RBI, run) and Ross Heffley started the inning with singles and Mueller came in to score on a throwing error by catcher Tyson Blaser as both runners combined for a double steal. The double steal accounted for two of Rome's five steals on the night and all them came in the first three innings.

Cory Brownsten tallied the game's second run in the fourth when he singled, moved to third on an error and scored on a groundout by Mueller. Will Oliver, who relieved Wetherell in the fourth, kept the Braves off the board after the second run. In six innings out of the bullpen, he allowed only one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Rome's pitching staff was excellent in making the lead stand up. Alex Wood started and threw four scoreless innings, retiring the first ten batters in order. Navery Moore (6-3) took over in the fifth and continued the outstanding pitching with three more shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Ian Thomas relieved Moore in the eighth and pitched two scoreless innings en route to his fourth save.

BALLPARK FUN: Following the game, as part of a RiverDogs' "Group Experience", a fan tossed a ceremonial "last pitch" to mark the conclusion of the contest.

COMING UP: On Wednesday night, the teams will play game three starting at 7:05 pm with RHP Scottie Allen (3-6, 4.59 ERA) going for Charleston against RHP A.J. Holland (1-7, 5.48 ERA). All fans at the game who are 65 or older will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, soda and chips on Senior Wednesday.
